Game of Thrones in Granada

Who has not been drawn into the Game of Thrones on streaming service HBO? Well, you might be interested to know what they are filming in the Castillo La Calahorra.

GRA Castillo de Calahorra 400x250The shooting going on in the castle is for the prequel to The Game of Thrones entitled The House of the Dragon and most of the shooting appears to be taking place in the evening.

The Castillo La Calahorra, which is not far from Guadix, is in private hands and has been used for other film locations, such as for The Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott 2005) with Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson and Orlando Bloom.

Now, if you are thinking of popping up there for a cuppa with the cast you’ll be disappointed as nobody is allowed up the hill to the castle – not even the locals who live just under it, as it is private property, after all.

The location is festooned with cranes and lighting – they’re filming at night to avoid the heat, probably, so the lighting gantry for the main courtyard is massive. Some of the windows are also covered with black drapes.

With the flames and explosions within the castle on Thursday night, they must have been filming a sequence involving dragons, at a rough guess.

We’re lucky to still have the castle, which was built at the beginning of the 1500s, because at the beginning of the 1900s it was nearly sold to an American who was going to transport it, brick-by-brick, back to the United States.
