An individual was arrested in Salobreña, accused of fraud after allegedly using an elderly man's bankcard to obtain 18,600 euros.
The 41-year-old suspect, who has a criminal record, made a mental note of the victim’s pin code and taking advantage of the elderly victim’s trust, he later removed the bankcard from his wallet to withdraw cash and then return it to its place.
The theft came to light when on one of these occasions the man realised that the bankcard was not in his wallet, so, thinking that he had lost it, he went to the bank to cancel it on the 23rd of March.
However, the bank informed him that 18,600 euros had been withdrawn from his account prior to his reporting it, starting in January. The elderly man immediately reported what had happened to the Guardia Civil post in Salobreña.
Using CCTV images from the ATM’s where the money was withdrawn, 600 euros at a time, they recognised the person making the withdrawals as a known local resident with a criminal record. The suspect had delivered take-away purchases to the victim, which was when he had made a note of the pin number.
