A reader writes in to ask whether people should boycott certain well known businesses for continuing to trade in Russia.

Are we aware of this and should we be boycotting??
It’s a story about Auchan (Al Campo), Leroy Merlin and Decathlon still trading in Russia!

Well said.
There were sanctions against Iraq, including the limited supply of medicines, which negatively affected
the health of normal Iraqi citizens.
“When asked on US television if she [Madeline Albright, US Secretary of State] thought that the death of half a million Iraqi children [from sanctions in Iraq] was a price worth paying, Albright replied: “This is a very hard choice, but we think the price is worth it.”

Silly question. Apparently the illegal poppy acres in Afghanistan are producing most of the world’s opiate. Which then get passed onto business persons in Pakistan , who then pass it onto the West. Business is flourishing. So should we punish both Afghanistan and Pakistan by boycotts. Or by withholding aid.??
Not quite as up front as the Russian situation. But loss of life and ruined lives are the result of this trade. Or do we pick and choose our boycotts carefully.
Pakistan allegedly harbours people that hate our western ideology. Yet still we give aid to them. Afghanistan was an endless bucket for aid. Especially for its invisable armies. As I said we choose our boycotts carefully !!
Did anybody call for boycotts on companies that didn’t stop trading with the US and UK following the invasion of Iraq in 2003?
Besides, boycotts hurt a lot of people, not just the heads of big companies, but also the workers at the bottom of the company ladder who certainly don’t make company-strategy decisions.
