The Banco de España has issued an important warning about making card payments below 50 euros, which do not require the PIN.
The ‘contactless’ system allows card user to merely pass their card in front of the screen of an electronic, card reader in all kinds of establishments, which is very comfortable.
The problem begins when, if asked if we want a copy of the transaction, we decline because the card holder might not see the quantity that has been entered into the machine for payment.
If the person using the card reader makes a mistake or is less than honest, then as long as the amount is lower than 50 euros and you decline to have a copy, then you will have no idea what you have been charged until you check your bank-account associated with the card used.
Furthermore, most banks will send out an SMS, if you request the service, each time you use you card, informing of the quantity withdrawn.
For this reason, the Bank of Spain recommends always asking for a copy of the transaction.
Editorial comment: I am one of the lazy buggers that always says “don’t bother” when asked, so I shall make amends from now on.
