Treated Water Irrigation

The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa Tropical has authorised the irrigation cooperations in Almuñécar and La Herradura to use treated sewage water.

ALM Valle Rio Verde from NorthThey in turn had received permission for this to be done from the Junta de Andalucía using the treated water from the EDAR (sewage-treatment plant) next to Río Verde where the track to the Cerro de Itrabo is.

However, what is now needed is the pumping equipment which will have to be set up within the EDAR installations – the Mancomunidad has ceded the necessary space. Once the pumps are in place, the treated water can be pumped to the irrigation cooperatives well-water extraction installations or their large storage-water ponds.

The irrigation communities that already have permission are the Comunidad de Regantes de Río Verde and the Comunidad de Regantes de San Andrés.

Chairwoman of the Mancomunidad (who is also the Mayor of Albuñol) Sra. Sánchez explained that they had been wading through the necessary bureaucracy for months but that she was very happy that all the necessary authorisations are now in place.
