We ran a article yesterday about a driver going the wrong way up a Motril street but this is much worse... it's on an autovía.
The incident actually took place about three months ago and the Guardia Civil have been investigating since then.
They examined camera images of a car which drove eight kilometre through oncoming traffic… just to avoid a police check point.
This took place on the A-7 coastal autovía starting at kilometre point 367 within the municipality of La Sorvilan/Melicena where the Guardia Civil had set up a drugs-control, check point.
The driver, catching sight of the police, screeched to a halt, turned his BMW around and headed back along the same way he had come.
He raced along, passing oncoming vehicles until eight kilometres along he used the autovía Exit 359 (Castell) to cross over onto the correct lanes, and continuing westwards.
Over three weeks the police examined CCTV images provided by the Centro de Control de Tráfico de Málaga, until they finally got his numberplate – the owner is a resident of the city of Granada.
There is no way to know what he was transporting or whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs now; i.e., the motivation that would make him avoid a police, check point taking such risks, but at the very least he will be done for dangerous driving.
Editorial comment: the press release put the check point at kilometre point 367, which is on a bridge over the barranco above Melicena (Sorvilán) however this was described as being in Polopos/La Mamola, so we have taken the kilometre point given rather than the municipality quoted.
