Lack of Policing?

Towards the end of last month a drunk driver run into another vehicle on the Paseo del Altillo. He then began a fight with a pedestrian.

The Guardia Civil based in Motril had to attend to the situation because there were no Policía Local patrols available, explained the spokesperson for the police union, Cristopher Sánchez.

The Policía Local are certainly not happy about the situation as they consider the lack of personnel amongst their ranks is leaving Almuñécar with a state of insecurity. Furthermore, minimum policing service is not being covered because there should always be two foot patrols out and somebody at the desk taking calls, etc.

According to the police union, over 400 calls have been missed since May. On four nights there was only the Chief of Police on duty so that the police station could at least stay open. For these reasons the police union asks the Town Council to enter into talks with them in order to improve municipal policing.

The Policía Local took the Town Council to court over their unpaid over time and won the case, but the Mayor has still not conformed with the court sentence.

“A town the size of Almuñécar-La Herradura cannot afford not to have patrols out on some days and during weekends – so far, we have been lucky as nothing bad has happened – we cannot continue in this manner,” said the spokesperson for the police union.
