The Guardia Civil has recovered the body of a man from the Pico Lucero on the Sierra de Almijara within the muncipality of Alhama de Granada.
It was around 13.45h yesterday whilst the victim and another two people were hiking on the Pico Lucero a.k.a. Raspón de los Moriscos, when the 58-year-old victim literally fell down dead.
One of his companions called the emergency, call centre whilst the other attempted to revive the man using the CPR method, carrying on for at least half an hour but to no avail.
In the meantime the Guardia Civil despatched its rescue helicopter with a rescue crew of two. Approaching the area they found themselves immersed in thick cloud cover making it impossible to continue so the helicopter made several attempts to land safely but had to abandon the manoeuvre after receiving news that the victim was dead and returned to base as it would now be a recovery operation on foot rather than an airlift rescue.
Three members of the Sección de Montaña de Granada, together with three team members from the Álora (Málaga) section, set off in their vehicles for the base of the said mountain peak where the Sendero de los Moriscos begins at 17.30h and had reached the group of hikers by 18:30h.
After inspecting the area where the death took place (for the coroner) they brought the body back down to the vehicles on a stretcher, taking about an hour and a half. From there it was taken to the Resinera de Fornes, where a hearse was waiting to take charge of the dead man.
