The Volcano Grows Quiet

The authorities on La Palma (Canary Islands) announced that the volcanic eruption has apparently concluded after 85 days of continuous activity.

SPN The Volcanic AftermathThe Councillor for the Board of Public Adminstrations, Julio Pérez, said that following a ‘volcanic autumn,’ (which began on the 19th of September and fell silent on the 13th of December) the Plan Pevolca would remain in force as the gases emitted from beneath the ground and the heat contained within the lava continue to be present.

With the New Year the slow process of bringing people back to their homes, in the case of the ones that are untouched and/or not cut off, as well as repairing road communications, begins. In some cases islanders have to do a complete lap of the island to get to the other side of a lava flow just metres across.

Whatever the case, the recovery from this devastating eruption, in terms of destroyed property (although not in lives, fortunatley) will be a long hard road to follow.
