International, handball player, Irene Espínola, Almuñequera, received a plaque from the Mayor, Trinidad Herrera in recognition of her feats.

Irene is a member of the Spanish Handball Team, which took part in the Campeonato Mundial, held in Torrevieja (Alicante) and Granollers (Barcelona).

Councillor for Sports, Luis Aragón, was also present at the presentation and who remarked that Almuñécar has many excellent sportsmen and sportswomen.

The Mayor said that she and the people of Almuñécar were “very, very proud” of Irene’s achievements as an elite sportswoman and because she is spreading the name of the town wherever she plays.

Irene Espínola in turn thanked the Mayor for her hometown support: “for me it has been great participating in the world championships,” adding that she hoped to continuing giving her hometown reason to be proud of her.
