There's a small square in the city of Granada that bears the name Joe Strummer, who many of you might remember was a member of the British punk band, The Clash.
The square, which was inaugurated in 2013, is in the Barrio del Realejo, at the top of Escoriaza.
In the last eight years things have deteriorated and even the plaque has disappeared, so the City Council has decided to do some restoration work on it.
The wall is being reinforced and the drinking fountain is being restored. When this work is completed, a new plaque will be put in place in the Placeta de Joe Strummer.
The original plaque was of the Fajalauza style but that disappeared, along with a replacement, thanks to souvenir hunters. In fact, the first one didn’t last even a couple of months – some Clash Fans have itchy fingers, it seems.
The wall that holds up a bank behind it, is cracked in places so that urgently needed to be shored up as it was getting dangerous. The Servicio de Infraestructura took one look at it and decided that part of the wall worse affected needed to be demolished and along with it the drinking fountain.
As for the plaque, it will be placed at least three metres up so it will be visible but not so easily ‘accessible.’
All this will take about a month, but one element that won’t reappear once the task is completed will be the graffiti on the wall, painted by a well known local, street artist, Niño de las Pinturas. No doubt the person concerned will rectify that.
