A healthy number of volunteers has carried out a seabed clean-up just off Cotobro last Saturday, despite the strong surf and currents.
The Red de Vigilantes Marinos in Almuñécar, organised by the Club Universitario de Buceo de Granada (CUB) and the Asociación de Voluntariado GEA had the logistic support of Nivea Sun in this task.
The volunteers managed to pull up over 30 kilos of rubbish from the seabed off Cotobro and Playa de San Cristóbal.
They had to face surface winds of 30 to 35 kph which obviously made the task much more difficult. Yet, whilst they were busy below the surface, municipal maintenance workers picked up about 13 kilos from the beach itself, amongst them a large proportion of cigarette butts.
About 20 kilos of objects taken from the seabed were lead weights, fishing lines & nets and other recreational-fishing-related objects.
