Vaccine Hold Up

Andalucía has been rolling out Covid vaccines at a tremendous rate, but that could change dramatically within days because of supplies.

SPN Vaccine CoronavirusRegional Health Minister, Jesús Aguirre, pointed out that this could affect those waiting for their second jab, specifically, those waiting for Pfizer vaccines who are expecting their second jab next week.

He basically confirmed what was already known, which was that the Pfizer Laboratory was going to start sending much smaller batches during the months of July and August. He said that there could be a 40% drop in vaccine numbers.

Minister Aguirre said that a drop in the single-dose vaccine, Janssen could also come about owing to contamination in some of its batches.

Not only did he express the possibility about programmed, second-dose jabs next week, but also that the planned initiation of other age group could be delayed, such as for those in their 20s, which was to begin in July.

It seems that the drop in production during July and August in the Pfizer laboratories is down to the anticipated doses sent out in June… in other words the batches planned for summer were sent out ahead of time in June. Spain requested this boost in number of Pfizer vaccines to make up for the shortfall in AstraZeneca batches earlier in the year..

As for AstraZeneca supplies, they will stop using them once the 60 to 67 group has received their second jab because they can’t (or won’t through caution) use them on younger people.

All this, however, is coinciding with the arrival of the Delta Variant in Spain, unfortunately.
