Locals are far from happy with Costas' decision to wall off vehicle access to Playa de Poniente and Playa El Cable in Motril.
In fact, local residents have organised a demonstration to protest against the walls, because the part of the beach nearest to the paseo has long been used as a parking area for beach users.
Costas considers that the restriction on vehicle access not only brings the layout of the beaches concerned into line with existing norms, but also guarantees the protection of the sand for the enjoyment of members of the general public.
Not all vehicle access to the said beaches has been walled off; just two of the four such entrances; i.e., leaving the other two for authorised vehicles to access the beach in the case of emergencies, etc.
Furthermore, Costas says that it is working closely with the Junta de Andalucía to give access to the beach (that conforms with the Ley de Costas) for chiringuitos staff and delivery services.
However, the Asociaciones de Empresarios y Comerciantes de la Costa Tropical and Motril Town Hall are in disagreement with this move and will be joining a protest that will take place tomorrow at the end of the Paseo Marítimo Rey Balduino.
