Six Thousand Trees

There is a project to plant 6,100 saplings on the side of the river, providing an 8.3km hike for walkers to enjoy.

SAL Boundary and River OnLThe municipal limits of Salobreña stretch from the mouth of the Río Guadalfeo to the entrance of the gorge on the N-323. The first part of the western boundary runs on eastern side of the river.

On a strip with an area of 24 hectares, there will one day be a shaded walk through willows and poplar trees, as well as tamarix and oleander bushes, amongst others.

The regional Minister for Agriculture, Carmen Crespo, came to Salobreña to present the project, where she explained that this is a pilot project because up till now work conducted in and around riverbeds in Andalucía have been limited to keeping rivers, ramblas and barrancos clear of excess vegetation to prevent flooding.

With this project, however, it is a drive to turn the riverbanks into a place of recreation for walkers and families wishing to picninc, for example.

The first stage of the project has a budget of 345,000 euros, which is mainly clearing the terrain and preparing it for the planting campaign.

The Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, was also present, as further up the river it becomes a border between the two municipalities.

The work will also include a total distance of 24 kilometres of footpaths and unpaved lanes on both sides of the river, including those accessing these riverside paths. Furthermore, there will also be two pedestrian crossing points along the river.
