A new-build house near the UP Gym in Motril has reached the finalist stage for one of the most prestigious European, architectural-design prizes.
Casa Cero, which is situated on Calle Bruselas, was designed by Diego Jiménez, together with Juana Sánchez in 2018 for a Motril family who have a son with a sensorial handicap.
It is designed in such a way that the very layout of the house would aid his daily routine thanks to the use of natural light.
“The house, which is well lit yet intimate, is a kind of therapy for the family,” explained Diego Jiménez, adding that they had consulted with psychologists and other experts who pointed them towards circular spaces.
After several setbacks, the house was completed in 2020 costing some 270,000 euros; it took a year to design the house and another year to find a builder willing to tackle such a design.
Casa Cero has to vie with around 30 other entries from all over Europe in the prize competition. The judge panel had originally selected 449 constructions before whittling it down to the 30 finalists
The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award is granted every two years to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe.
