Dive Clean Up

AND Volunteer CrewThe Asociación Equilibrio Marino carried out its SOS Corales project aimed at cleaning up the seabed off the Punta de la Mona, La Herradura yesterday.

The clean-up operation had the blessing of the Junta de Andalucía and was in collaboration with the Universidad de Granada, the NGO Coral Guardián, the Marina del Este, the La Herradura diving sector… and the Town Hall.

One of the tasks was to remove a length of fishnet, tangled amongst rock between 20 and 25 metres down. Another objective was a lost nasa trap (cylindrical net with hops along its length), which lay about 30 metres down.

Apart from these two specific objectives they also did a sweep of the seabed at down to a depth of 25 metres, looking for fishing lines and other fishing equipment.

The team had a support boat for the divers onto which the rubbish brought to the surface was stored. The divers worked to a protocol set out that limited the damage to the seabed flora when removing tangled nets, etc.
