Motril port will receive a visit from the Spanish warship, Castilla this weekend where it will be open for visits.
This landing ship (amphibious-assault ship) docks on Friday the 28th (Día de Andalucía) and visitors will be able to go aboard starting that day.
The visiting hours are as follows:
Friday: 16.00h to 18.45h
Saturday: 10.00h to 14.00h and 16.00h to 18.45h
Sunday: 10.00h to 13.00h
The reason that Castilla is able to tie up at Motril Port this weekend is beause it is taking part in a nearby naval exercise, GRUFLEX-20, being held in the Golfo de Cádiz.
Part of the exercise will be a nighttime amphibious landing in the said gulf where there is a military training ground (Campo de Adiestramiento de la Sierra del Retín) covering some 5,400 hectares, including virgin beaches.
The amphibious-assault ship Castilla (L-52), which entered service in the year 2000, is technically known as a landing platform/dock (LPD). An LPD differs from the older landing ships (LSDs) as they also have a flight deck, as well as an LSD’s well deck (docking well) from which landing craft are launched.
