GRA Tractor Protest Feb 2020Granada has never suffered so much from a protest march as it did yesterday; neither in numbers or duration. Everybody will remember the day that Granada stood still.

The city centre and its accesses were blocked by around 750 tractors from eleven in the morning until seven in the evening.

You couldn’t cross the city centre in a car, bus or even taxi – only the trams in places were working. But it wasn’t only the city that was reduced to a stand still but the bypass as well.

The Chief of Police, José Manuel Avilés, confirmed that it had been the worse case of circulatory chaos that had been experience in Granada since the war, because, he pointed out, the people who had organised the tractor-born protest had not stuck to the agreed conditions.

The pickets prevented the tractors from exiting the city via the bypass through the agreed exit points (Arabial and Neptuno). The original idea was for the tractor procession to pass through the city; not become trapped in it, which had turned out to be the objective of the pickets, apparently.
