A Public Prosecutor has recommended 18 months’ imprisonment and a 30-month ban from practice for a dental surgeon at a dental clinic in Granada.
The reason why was that he had recommended the extraction of five teeth to be replaced with implants and a prothesis, which he carried out himself but was done incorrectly, causing an infection and consequent complications.
When the patient had approached the surgery in July 2015, he was diagnosed with slight to moderate periodontal loss, lesions to the maxilar and other problems with the mandibula.
The accused, Diego Carlos S.T., who was the Head Dental Surgeon at a dental clinic on Calle Cervantes in Granada, then recommended the extraction of eight teeth and for them to be replaced by six implants to secure a hybrid prothesis.
The operation went ahead in September of that year, costing the patient 5,000 euros.
However, after the operation the patient suffered a severe infection so he went to the A&E at his nearest hospital to treat it. Suffering from chronic pain he later had two of the implants removed in July, 2017 followed by the remaining four.
According to the Public Prosecutor, the implants had been badly placed. Some of them hardly had any inclination and at least three were not securely imbedded in bone, all of which caused bone loss. Furthermore, he considers that there was no follow-up dental attention.
The hearing will take place on the 5th of this month in Granada.
