Things not to Send in the Post

GRA GRENADE IN THE POSTPolice bomb-disposal experts in Granada had to deal with a WW2 grenade that somebody had sent in the post.

The postal-service, scanner operators picked up what was clearly a Mills- Bomb-type, hand grenade so they informed the Policía Nacional.

When the TEDAX (bomb disposal unit) opened the package and examined the explosive device they confirmed that it held no charge. They had tracked down the sender of the parcel to be present when they opened it. He explained that he had picked it up at a flea market.

As claimed by the sender, this Mk-2, US grenade held no explosive charge, as it was a practice (M21) grenade used in training.

Although the sender could have faced criminal charges had it been a live grenade, he will still face a stiff fine under the Reglamento de Armas.

The British Mills Bomb was in production from 1915 into the 80s during which time 75 million of them were manufactured. The US Mk2 was in production from 1918 to the 1950s but as so many were made, as well, they were still in use up to 1969 with the USN.
