The Policía Nacional arrested a father at Madrid Airport trying to smuggle his 2-year-old daughter back to Algeria.
The suspect had forcibly taken his daughter from a children’s home in the UK in Nottingham. He had previously lost custody over his her.
He allegedly threatened staff there with a firearm before tying them up and gagging them and then fleeing the country.
When arrested he was actually on board an aircraft on the runway, waiting to take off for Oran – the flight had made a stop-over in Madrid.
The child has since been placed in care pending her return to the UK authorities.
The Spanish police had acted on an urgent request for collaboration from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
