Taxi drivers in Almuñécar are following the lead set by their colleagues in Motril by offering ‘safe taxis’ for women.

Thus the town’s 23 taxis belonging to the municipality will provide free assistance to any woman that finds hereself in a dangerous situation on the streets, explained one of their number, Tomás Valero.

All a woman needs to do, if she finds herself in danger, is flag down a passing taxi: “we can take her to the medical centre, to the police station or wherever she requests – we’re there to listen to them and provide support,” explained Sr. Valero.
