La Herradura Regatta

LHR OCR Regata CruceroThe First Councillor for La Herradura, Juan José Ruiz Joya, announced that the village would have its own regatta event next month.

The councillor made this announcement up in Madrid at the Feria Internacional de Turismo, which was held last month.

This 2-day, weekend event, Regata ICON Marina, (weekend) will involve large yachts and will be based in the Marina del Este on the 16th and 17th of March.

He went on to say that the Regata ICON Marina, “will fill Almuñécar and La Herradura Bay with racing yachts.” The idea is not only make the Marina del Este a focal point for sailing on this occasion but also to turn this event into an annual event.

The race is organised by Eventos Náuticos Costa del Sol, who have nothing but praise for the area, it’s benign weather, prevailing winds and waters, making it a prime Mediterranean choice for yacht racing.

On the first day competitors will leave Málaga and Motril ports bound for the Marina del Este using the ORC rating system, which uses handicaps so no matter what size and sailing capacity a yacht has, all competiting craft are judged on an ‘even keel.’

The Málaga run is 33 nautical miles whilst the Motril one is only 10, which will make it easier to handle the arrivals in a as they arrive in a staggered order, thus keeping the regatta fluid.

The second day will be used to validate the previous days results and pit the Málaga arrivals against the Motril ones in another 10 nautical mile route in circuit form in front of the bay. The day will end with prize giving and certificates that have yet to be decided upon.

All of this, of course, will depend upon the weath as adverse conditions could cause the event to be postponed.
