Protestors in the Market

ALM Market ProtestThe Almuñécar Municipal Market affair continues to fester; the latest development was a demonstration staged inside the market itself.

Traders, locals and politicians took part in the protest on the 20th, convoked by the Plataforma en Defensa del Mercado de Almuñécar.

Their beef is that the traditional market is better than having a supermarket chain occupying the upper floor and market stalls below, with the new building occupying what was the whole perimeter patio within the market walls.

The heavy rainfall did not stop the demonstration from taking place, planned as it was for midday – it merely meant that the protestors would gather inside rather than outside, where they would have been more visible to non-participants.

The participating political figures belonged to the opposition parties PSOE, Convergencia Andaluza, Ciudadanos and Unidos Podemos.

Editorial comment: One things is for sure, the present inactive situation is slowly strangling the livelihood of the market stallholders and surrounding businesses, so either they demolish and build, or they repair and reopen the underground parking – anything is better than more months staggering by without any progress.
