The Guardia Civil arrested an 18-year-old man with a criminal record in Almuñécar, suspected of stealing eight moped/scooters/motorbikes.
It was at the beginning of last month that the Salobreña-based Guardia Civil were called out to a road accident involving a 49cc scooter. When taking notes of the identity of the rider and the vehicle, the found that he did not have any driving licence whatsoever and that the bike had been reported as stolen in Almuñécar.
Not long after this incident the Guardia Civil in Almuñécar began to receive reports of six mopeds and two motorbikes having been stolen.
In conjunction with the Policía Local they opened an investigation which soon led back to the man who had had the accident earlier in the month. After interviewing his neighbours and the vehicle-theft victims they accrued sufficient evident to charge him with these thefts.
They set about trying to find and arrest him and when they did, he admitted to having stolen the said vehicles, according to the police. He also indicated where some of them could be found. To date, four have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
Although the local law court has been given all the investigation documents, the search continues for the missing machines and the police have not ruled out further arrests.
