Do you like octopus? Would you like to fish them? Well don’t – it’s illegal, as yet another individual has found out.
The environmental department of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA, confiscated 29 kilos of common octopus from a snorkeller and charged him under a maritime fishing law (Ley 1/2002, 4th Abril).
The arrest was possible thanks to citizen cooperation; i.e., somebody tipped the police off to the presence of somebody apparently fishing using a snorkel near La Herradura.
The Guardia Civil sent a patrol to the Punta de la Mona and observed the individual below from the clifftops. He came out of the water with a small net and hid it amongst the rocks before making his way to his car.
He was met by more policemen who asked him for his ID and who inspected the area where he had come out of the water and found the net with 14 specimens, weighing a total of 29 kilos.
The above-mentioned law permits using a spear gun for fish but prohibits the capture of cephalods.
