The recent mountain-brush fire near Gualchos was allegedly caused by a women with mental health issues, according to the Guardia Civil.

The fire broke out at 13.10h in the area known as the Cerro del Castillo on Sunday the 24th and during the two hours that it took to bring it under control and put it out it only consumed about a hectare of mountain shrub.

Several locals say that they saw the 50-year-old woman throw a “burning bucket” onto this piece of land, which is near housing on Calle Real.

According to the Guardia Civil, the suspect had to be treated at Hospital Santa Ana after suffering a mental breakdown.

Social Services in the Gualchos-Castell Town Hall have treated the woman on several previous occasions after incidents had caused concern amongst neighbours.
