An espeto, before we go any further, is sardines on a bamboo skewer; around half a dozen. If you like ’em, today’s your last chance!
Well, not your last chance, ever! It’s just that they have been holding the II Semana del Espeto in twelve chiringuitos in Almuñécar and La Herradura since Tuesday and today is the last day!
The Asociación de Chiringuitos de la Costa Tropical organised the event, which offers a beer and an espeto for just five euros, thanks to the sponsorship of Cervezas Victoria.
The essence of an Andalusian summer on the coast is chiringuitos and espetos, so the event has been organised to promote them both.
The participating chiringuitos are: El Balate (Playa del Pozuelo); Playamar, Casa Mariano and Primera Ola (Velilla) and Restaurante Vizcaya and Dorada de Plata (Playa San Cristóbal).
In La Herradura: El Chambao de Joaquín, Bambu Beach, La Sardina and Bueno (La Herradura Bay) and La Barraca (Cantarriján).
If you think you already know how to skewer your sardines, you might not know a very important detail: when you skewer them, make sure the bamboo stake/skewer goes through below the spine and place the skewer inclined with the skewered side up. The reason being that when you turn them, the spine will be against the bamboo and will stop the flesh falling off.
