Fifteen municipal policemen in Salobreña, representing 80% of the total, have denounced a lack of safe working conditions.
They consider that there is a deficiency in staff numbers and equipment, which they put down to a lack of interest on the part of the Mayor in rectifying the situation
They say that they have been complaining about this matter since Mayor María Eugenia Rufino came to office.
According to the policemen the department only has one serviceable vehicle and there are only two bulletproof vests available. Their radios are also inoperative.
The staff is diminishing in numbers because individuals, fed up with these shortfalls, are leaving the force or transferring to other posts.
Finally, the Town Hall still owes them overtime pay dating back to 2016.
The Mayor, on the other hand, has expressed “her surprise” upon hearing from the police-union spokesperson. What surprises her, she says, is the lack of truth behind these claims.
The vehicular deficiencies are being sorted out, she claims, and things are underway for purchasing new patrol vehicles.
She also says that the Town Hall has paid 90% of what it owes in overtime.
