Sewage Plant Protest March

NRJ Sewage Treatment Plant 05:17Over 700 people gathered outside the unfinished sewage plant in Nerja on Saturday the 3rd in protest at it not having been completed and put into action.

Actually, the Policía put the number at 700 but the Guardia Civil only calculated 400 – makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Besides the individual protesters, there were also representatives from the tripartite (PSOE/IU/EVA_Podemos), as well as Ciudadanos and the Chairwoman of the Asociación de Empresarios de Nerja, Ángela Díaz. Even the Mayor was there. However, there were no representatives from the PP, who used to run the Town Hall from 1995 to 2015.

With banners bearing the slogan, Sewage Plant Now!, the protest began at 11,00h from in front of the Town Hall and from there along Calle Carmen, Calle Puerta del Mar, Calle Pintada, Avenida de Pescia, all the way to the stalled sewage-treatment plant.

Some of the banners and signs read, “Welcome to the Mediterranean Sea, Verano Azul tinged Brown, Clean Sea; Healthy Tourism and Plenty of Fitur and Very Little Sewage Treatment.”

Reality is that the plant has been dead in the water since Summer 2016 because the construction companies that banded together to get the contract went into receivership in July last year.

The reason that the PP didn’t join the protest was that, in their words, the protest was “politically opportunistic and inappropriate.”
