A man was arrested in Monforte del Cid (Alicante) for making a false statement concerning an alleged mugging – he had made it all up because he was scared of telling his wife the truth.

The 30-year-old accused had gone to the Guardia Civil post claiming that he had been mugged and robbed of 400 euros. He said that the mugging had been violent and showed the marks on his neck as evidence of this.

But it’s hard to get one past the Guardia and they soon sniffed out a porkie (discovered a lie). Under further questioning the man broke down and confessed that he had made it all up because he didn’t want his wife to find out that he had blown the money on a wild night out.

He also explained how he had used cable ties to cause the marks on his throat.
