The opposition party, PSOE, has called on the Central Goverment to study the best way of bringing a rail connection to Motril Port and then execute it.
Well, somebody needs executing, that’s for sure, but on with the article…
According to the socialists – bear in mind the Port Authority is headed by a socialist too – such a connection is the only part that is missing from the Corredor Ferroviario Mediterráneo (Med Rail Corridor), which is a EU project.
The Granada-Almería branch ended up without any EU grant, the PSOE say, whilst roundly criticising the situation over the AVE (high-speed train network) between Antequera and Granada. It’s worth remembering that Granada train station has been closed for nearly two years now, because of the delayed AVE connection.
The Head of the Port Authority, Francisco Álvarez de la Chica, points out that the four Spanish regions through which the Med Rail Corridor runs generates 45% of the Gross National Product; 49% of all national exports and 50% of land-transported goods; i.e., road and rail.
