The next film in English (with subtitles in Spanish) to be shown in Almuñécar will be A United Kingdom on Tuesday the 24th at 19.00h in the Casa de la Cultura.
Synopsis: King Seretse Khama of Botswana married a British, white woman, Ruth Williams, which was controversial and put his kingdom into political and diplomatic turmoil.
Based upon the book Colour Bar by Susan Williams, the films stars David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Tom Felton. It tells of how Seretse met Ruth in post WW2 London, where he was studying.
The marriage is opposed by the British Government, which is worried about Botswana’s relation with South Africa. It is also opposed by their own families.
Although he wins the backing of his own people, the British Government imposes a 5-year exile, banning him from returning to Botswana during that time. Churchill promises to lift the exile if reelected but instead extends the exile for life once back in power. Slowly influential people in the UK begin to support his cause, as does the USA…
That’s this coming Tuesday at 19.00h.
