A little over a year ago the village of Montillana saw the death of a 5-year-old boy when he was killed by an errant rocket during the village fiestas.
Now the court case has come up and the Public Prosecutor is recommending a year’s prison sentence for the Councillor who had been in charge of the firework display. He also recommeds that the Councillor and the insurance company used by the Town Hall pay 162.170 euros to each of the parents, making a total of 324.340 euros.
It was on the evening of the 7th of August in the part of the village known as Las Eras, where the portable bullring for the fiestas had been set up, when the accident occurred.
The councillor had the responsibility of launching several rockets to announce the beginning of the fiestas. He went to his car and pullet out several rockets, launching them some 25 to 30 metres from the bullring benches
The councillor decided to launch them using his open car door as a rest, rather than using the provided rocket launcher. He fired off the first with the other two resting against the door. The sparks from the first ignited the other two. He tried to put them to but couldn’t prevent one heading straight for the stands and hitting the child square in the head, killing him instantly.
