Motril’s Citizen Safety Councillor, María Ángeles Escámez, announced that the Policía Local will be paying special attention to seat belt and baby-seat use next week.
This is part of a wider campaign for drivers’ awareness to the importance of these safety devices in cars, as well as child-seat fixtures.
She pointed out that despite the efficiency of car seat belts – they reduce the death rate by 77%, she says – there are quite a few drivers who do not wear them. Studies in recent years show that a steady 25% of people involved in car accidents were not wearing a seat belt at the time.
One of the objectives of the Estrategia de Seguridad Vial 2011-2020, to which next week’s campaign belongs, it to bring home the importance of using the correct baby-seat arrangements and that such seats are securely installed.
