Dead Sunfish on Velilla Beach

Two workers on beach cleaning duty came across the carcass of a 70-kilo Pez Luna (ocean sunfish) on Playa Velilla, Almuñécar.

However, this kind of fish is the heaviest known bony fish in the world. Adults weigh between 247 and 1,000kg. Another fun fact is that female sunfish can produce more eggs than any other known vertebrate; up to 300 million!

Anyway, so this was a relatively small one but even so, it’s a rather odd type of marine life to turn up on our beaches, where beach cleaners are normally required to dispose of the bodies of dolphins and small sharks, as well as the normal array of bottles and other litter.

Finally, ocean sunfish are great buddies as they feed almost exclusively on jellyfish – come ooooooon, sunfish! We love ya!
