A 45-year-old Belgian woman spent 24 hours stuck on a narrow ledge overlooking a nasty drop.
She had no food or water and waited away the hours hoping for an excursionist to pass by below and be able to call for help.
This took place in front of the Fuente Funes waterfall in the Rio Verde, Otivar. More on the location at the end of the article.
A group of climbers came across the woman after hearing her calling for help. At first, despite their climbing skills, they couldn’t get up to her, so they contacted a rescue team belonging to the Granada Fire Service. However before the firemen could get into action, the excursionists/climbers managed to reach her.
Apart from mild hypothermia and hunger, her 24-hour wait for somebody to come within earshot had left her no worse for wear.
The Belgian woman, who also speaks Spanish fluently, had spent the previous five days exploring the area before becoming stuck on the 50-cm-wide ledge
Editorial comment: I have been trying to figure out where they mean; the person who wrote the original article obviously doesn’t know the area, referring to it as “in the vicinity of Almuñécar.”
The Cueva de Funes is just beyond the Dique de IARA. When the say the Fuente de Funes, it must be referring to the starting point of the Chorreras, which is where the Junta de los Rios cascades begin. There is a waterfall that you approach from above at the end of a popular footpath.
The photo shows the Dique de IARA (pond) on the left which feeds the waterfalls below and the access track (white line) approaches from the right. At the top right-hand side of the photo there is a bend in the track, which is where the ledge must be.
