Coach Crash Update

SPN Coach CrashThe final figure for the death toll caused by the coach accident in Barcelona this morning is 13 and not 14 as was first announced.

The road accident – the worst in Spain since 2000 – occurred on the AP-7 near Freginals, Tarragona around 06.00h this morning.

All told around 30 people were injured – nine seriously – who were all hospitalized and five different medical facilities in the following towns: Amposta, Reus, Tortosa, Vinarós and Tarragona.

The Spanish Minister of the Interior, Jorge Fernández, has confirmed that the authorities are attempting to contact the families so that the remains of those that perished can be returned to them. Nine of the deceased 13 have already undergone postmortems and the remaining ones will receive autopsies tonight.

The bus was carrying 56 passengers (plus the driver) who were Erasmus students travelling between Barcelona and Valencia to see the Fallas (Valencian firework event). The students were from the following countries: Peru, Bulgaria, Poland, Ireland, Palestine, Japan, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, the UK, Italy, Hungry, German, Sweden and Switzerland.

Preliminary conclusions indicated that it was probably human error; i.e., the driver’s. The bus driver has been in this profession for over 30 years.
