The European Movement towards a Lay State is suing the Spanish Interior Minister before the Spanish Constitutional Court for giving a police medal for bravery to the Virgen Maria Santisima del Amor.
Now the said Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, whose functions include Head of Spanish Police Forces, is a devout Catholic and he thought it a good wheeze to give this medal (coined for policemen who risk their lives in the course of duty) to a mythical being, i.e. The Virgin.
The said lay association, which campaigns for the State – the Spanish one – to be free from religion in its day-to-day running, considers that the Minister’s surprising move to have been “illogical and extravagant.”
Editorial comment: bear in mind that there are dozens of Virgins, so why not give them all a medal for bravery, right? Hell, why not give one to the Archangel Gabriel, Moses and Noah (when he’s not drunk and indulging in incest) whilst we’re at it, together with Mohammed, Buddha, Thor and the Tooth Fairy?
These medals are for flesh and blood people who put their lives on the line for us; they are not produced so that a politician can play out his religious fantasies at public expense.
