A 44-year-old Romanian passenger tried to open one of the aircraft’s doors whilst in flight, in order to commit suicide, between Palma and Ibiza.
Crew members and other passengers managed to overpower him and prevent this.
As soon as he came on board other passengers noticed that he was very nervous, which is just a little unsettling for others nowadays, so several passengers decided to keep an eye on him.
Before you could say, “Last one out is a poof,” he was up and wrestling with the door mechanism. Fortunately, it is impossible to open the door in this way, thanks to a safety system in the cockpit, otherwise he would have been out of the door with the help of other passengers, no doubt… turban or no turban.
The fact is that the chap had diagnosed mental issues – no surprises there – but the aircrew had not been made aware of this.
With the man safely reduced (sat on) the pilot radioed the Control Tower to request landing priority at Ibiza’s airport and to have the Guardia Civil meet them on the tarmac.
With the aircraft safely down and the reluctant passenger making acquaintances with the gentlemen in green it was soon arranged for him to be taken to Hospital Can Misses before being charged with a crime against air safety.
Fortunately, this was not a US domestic flight otherwise he would have been shot dead by the pilot, the air hostess with the drinks trolley and several passengers, at the very first sign of a facial twitch.
