During a whole five hours a Spaniard was the richest man in the world, pushing Bill Gates into second place, according to Forbes. Then Microsoft‘s shares went up and Mr Gates regained his place.

The Spaniard in question is the owner of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, whose company is worth 72,300 million euros. Inditex might not mean much to you but one of his companies, Zara, the clothes-shop chain, probably will.

During those brief five hours, Sr Ortegas company was worth 79,600 million dollars and Bill Gates Microsoft was 72,300 million dollars… then Sr Ortega was pitched back into the ‘poverty’ of second place again.
