Things got complicated when a lorry carrying 300 kilos of smuggled hashish was hijacked by another drugs gang… and with the police in hot pursuit.
Chicago? Bogota? No, Motril.
The lorry with the stash had rolled off the Melilla ferry and once through the checks was hijacked by a rival drugs gang, armed with an AK-47 and other firearms, as well as convincing ill-intent.
Whilst two armed men jumped into the cab with the driver, forcing him to drive up the A-44 towards Granada, the gang also escorted the lorry with two high-range cars.
However, the Policia Nacional were on to them, after receiving tip offs from witnesses who had seen the lorry being hijacked by armed men. Giving chase, they managed to pull the lorry over, arresting the driver. The two gang members had jumped from the lorry and exited the autovía by jumping down a barranco. However, two hours later they had been tracked down and arrested.
Three policemen were injured in the operation.
Back at the port, the lorry was thoroughly searched and the 300 kilos of hashish were found under a false bottom.
The Motril policemen were back up by the Grupo de Operaciones Especiales (GOES) as well as a sniffer-dog unit.
