The municipal police retrieved a revolver in Río Chillar, Nerja, which had been found by excursionists under several large stones.
The firearm, which had had its registration number erased, was immediately handed on to the Guardia Civil for further investigation.
The gun had been found by a foreign couple who had been walking along the river course one morning last week.
