Sub-Aquatic Chess

ECO underwater chess OnLThere was an interesting game of chess taking place near Carchuna beach, but not many beach-goers witnessed it… because it was on the seabed.

Yes, the III Torneo Europeo de Ajedrez Submarino, the only event of its kind in Europe, took place on the seabed 60 metres off the beach at a depth of ten metres.

The winner was Jorge Fernández Montoro – who also won it last year, by the way – leaving rival player Raúl Cuesta Bustos, blowing disappointed bubbles. Both divers-cum-players hold national rankings as chess players.

The deciding game took about 25 minutes and around seventy moves, concluding with a sneaky double-knight attack.

As the title of the competition indicates, this is the third year running that it has been held and there are hopes that this sporting activity will catch on.

Obviously, to participate, you have to do at least a short course in scuba diving or already hold a certificate of proficiency, otherwise you’re going to have participants splashing around on the surface taking deep breaths in between moves.
