A 14-year-old boy allegedly beat a 62-year-old cleaning lady with an iron bar before taking her mobile phone and bus pass.

The incident, which took place in Guadix on Wednesday the 8th, has caused widespread indignation and disbelief, amongst her friends, neighbours and family.

María Gracia Martínez was employed as a cleaner in in the Nervión Plaza shopping centre and had surprised the minor in the act of breaking into lockers.

Emergency services received a call-out at 18.49h, directing them to the said shopping centre. She was rushed to the ICU at the Hospital Virgen del Rocío in a critical state with grave head injuries.

On the following day, the alleged culprit; a 14-year-old boy of Moroccan origin, was arrested.

The victim died the next day.

The aggressor also attacked a work colleague of the victim who tried to intervene, but whose injuries were not serious.

The daughter of the deceased commented, “If he is capable of doing this when he’s 14, imagine what he will be like when he’s 30,” adding, “I hope he goes down for life.”
