Extra Police Presence

CantarrijanOver San Juan there are a lot of people with matches, keen on starting a fire, and not always where they are allowed to.

Four people were charged with making fires close to wooded areas. We’re talking about Playa Cantarrijan, La Herradura; a beach that backs onto a pine-covered hillside.

But the Guardia Civil and Policía Local were also busy over the San Juan period carrying out breathalyzers on drivers on the Costa Tropical.

The GC detachment from Motril carried out 265 breathalyzers and 13 drug tests on the N-340, 14 drivers gave positive readings, three of whom had to hand over their keys.

Over the same period the GC reported 64 persons for infringing the Ley de Seguridad Ciudadana (public health law); some for consuming drugs in public places and some for carrying knives.

One driver in a white car was flagged down on the Granada junctions of the N-340 and became very nervous when he was asked to open the boot. The Guardia Civil found 13 small plastic bags of marihuana and 12 of hashish so he was duly charged with peddling drugs.

San Juan is a time when the beaches are crowded with young people looking for pills to pop or a joint to smoke so every small-time drug pusher converges on the beaches – hence the extra police controls.
