So, what do you do when you have far too much money and have run out of things to spend it on? Well, if you’re a mad, crazy Star Trek fan, you build your company headquarters building in the shape of the Starship Enterprise of course!
That’s right, the Star Trek obsessed, Liu Dejian, decided he would go where no man had gone before (in a building sense) and managed to get a building license to build a copy of the Enterprise in the Fujian Province of China.
What does a building such as this cost? Well, around 150 million euros are the estimated building costs, with many features, such as 10 metre high sheet metal sides to give it that authentic Enterprise look.
Construction took six years, finishing in 2014, when it opened as the headquarters of NetDragon Websoft. But hey, when you have more money than the Queen of England, it’s really just a drop in the ocean as far as costs are concerned.
The question I’m sure you are all asking; no, not the one about Mr. Dejian’s mental health, but the one about how a Chinese businessman becomes so obsessed with Star Trek? Well, he studied at the University of Kansas and started watching the series and soon became hooked.
Finally, just to give you an idea of the kind of money this chap has; he sold his smartphone company recently for 1.8 billion euros
