A couple are facing a 7-year prison sentence for allegedly giving their baby cocaine. The baby girl was only 18 months old at the time.

The incident goes back to April 2013 when the maternal grandmother rushed the baby to hospital because she was vomiting and very pale. Upon examination they detected that the child had consumed cocaine.

The parents were arrested and the child given over to the grandmother for temporary custody.

During the trial the accused claimed that they regularly took cocaine in the same room as the baby and that the baby “was always putting things in her mouth” and that therefore, “the little one could have found a little bag of it on the floor.”

However, a medical expert called in to give evidence informed that the baby had “habitual contact with the drug; not every day, but every other day,” which was evident because of traces found in hair samples.

The couple await the court verdict.
