Parts of the Paseo Marítimo de Salobreña are still giving away, as the driver of a street-cleaning vehicle discovered when it subsided beneath him.
The incident occurred this morning (Monday 9th) as the vehicle was slowly making its way along the pedestrian section when the surface gave way and caused the buggy tip over alarmingly.
The driver was unscathed, but the same could not be said of his underclothes, perhaps.
It seems that the wave action has undermined the paseo, explained the Mayor of Salobreña, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido.
The position of the Mayor is that the whole paseo needs replacing. He pointed out that there were Central Government funds earmarked for this use but when the PP took office in Madrid, it disappeared, meaning that it was cancelled.
Lastly, he called on the Central Government to fund breakwaters to prevent further beach erosion, which is as a consequence of the construction of Rules Dam – the river below it does not have sufficient water flow to bring down new sand for the natural regeneration of the beaches on either side of the river mouth.
